Another TN case reported in fungal meningitis outbreak

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The multi-state fungal meningitis outbreak is still threatening lives, including in Tennessee.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three more people have died from the disease since last month, and four new cases have been reported, including one additional case in Tennessee.

The CDC reports a total of 153 people in Tennessee alone have now contracted fungal meningitis linked to tainted steroid injections prepared at the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts.

That's the largest number in any state.

The Food and Drug Administration along with the CDC are still investigating the outbreak, which has totaled nearly 750 cases across 20 states.

Sixty-one people have died in the outbreak since September 2012, with the most recent deaths in Florida and Michigan.

Health experts say this has been the largest-ever outbreak of an infection associated with healthcare, with nearly 14,000 patients potentially at risk.
