As Independence Day nears, law enforcement say illegal fireworks continue to be a problem in Davidson County.

Sgt. Taylor Schmitz, a community affairs coordinator for the Metro Nashville Police Department, said nearly one-third of injuries associated with fireworks over the past 10 years have been caused by illegal explosives or homemade fireworks.

Metro police say it is legal to posses fireworks inside Davidson County, but it is illegal to set them off. It's also illegal to sell fireworks in Davidson County.

Only the fire marshal's office can grant permits for fireworks displays, and those are closely regulated for safety.

The city of Nashville plans to hold its largest and longest fireworks show to date Thursday. The event is called Let Freedom Sing, and popular country music group The Band Perry will take the stage about 7 p.m. with fireworks to follow about 9:45 p.m. at The Lawn at Riverfront Park.

More than 150,000 people attended last year's celebration near the riverfront, and with another large crowd expected, the city has added a second night of live music and fireworks at the same location on July 5.

Police say citizens can report unlawful use of fireworks in Davidson County by calling the dispatch center at 615-862-8600.
