Investigators are trying to figure out who poured gasoline all over a children's daycare, and police are looking at a convicted felon as a possible suspect.
A new employee showed up at the Village Child Development Center 24 Hour Daycare for her first day on the job when she found a window pushed in and all of the doors unlocked.
She walked in, smelled gasoline and called 911.
"It had been poured around. There were some areas where it was kind of like a little sponge area for little children to play in, and you could tell it was poured there," said Clarksville Fire Chief Ray Williams.
Gas was found near the walls and on the shelves, too.
"There was a piece of newspaper in the sink, and it had gasoline odor on it, also. Why that was there, I can't tell you," Williams said.
Nothing was burnt and no fingerprints were left behind.
"You don't want to put the children in jeopardy," Williams said.
But what investigators do know is that four people had keys and neighbors are scared.
And police are in a big hurry to figure out who is responsible.
"We do need to get to the bottom of it," Williams said.
For now, the daycare remains closed and police said they are looking at the owner's estranged husband as the sole suspect. To be clear, he has not been charged with any crime.
