Wednesday, pre-constructed walls and beams were moved from a warehouse downtown to the build site in Apison.

Steps2Hope is building Specialist Andrew Smith and his wife Tori a home.

"It means a lot knowing this is not about one soldier getting a home, its about honoring those who sacrificed so much," Andrew told Channel 3 Thursday.

Andrew lost both legs when he stepped on an IED while on patrol in Afghanistan.

With the help of hundreds of volunteers the build begins this morning.

"Just to know that people are still supporting the military and still supporting Andrew and us, it's just amazing," Tori said.

"Whether it's electricians, plumbers, contractors, someone picking up trash," Andrew said. "It couldn't be done without them."

It will take about a thousand volunteers to man the build site 24 hours a day over the next week.

Volunteers are still needed on the third shift, 11:00p.m. - 8:00a.m.
