200 state worker layoffs will proceed, says judge

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The state's plan to lay off nearly 200 workers is back on track.

The Tennessee State Employees Association filed a class-action lawsuit earlier this month. The group said the state did not give proper notice to workers who were being laid off.

The suit also claimed the state broke a civil service law that requires it to provide career counseling to laid-off workers.

Employees said the state violated that law when it took down a job-listing website just days after layoff notices went out.

On Monday, a judge ruled the state did not break the law and could go ahead with the layoffs.
