PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Nothing like a sheriff's sling to support for abused and neglected animals rescued from Maricopa County crime scenes.

A northern California man submitted the winning bid for the sling used by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio while he recovered from a broken shoulder.

Buck Dikes submitted the winning bid of $2,600 on eBay. The proceeds will that will be used to purchase a "doggie treadmill" and other supplies for the sheriff's animal MASH unit, comprising abused and neglected animals at the sheriff's no-kill shelters, according to an MCSO news release.

Dikes is expected to be in Phoenix July 18 to receive the autographed sling from Arpaio in person. Bidding began June 13, the day before Arpaio's 81st birthday.

Arpaio suffered a broken shoulder in a confrontation with a Phoenix sidewalk as he was walking to lunch Feb. 28. He wore the sling for three months during his recovery.

"I was attacked by the sidewalk," said the self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America."

The treadmill will enable recuperating dogs at Arpaio's downtown jail facility to exercise when outdoor temperatures are prohibitive, according to the release.

Horse harnesses and a plethora of supplies for other animals will also be purchased. Rescued horses are stabled in an area next to the Tent City Jail.

All animals are cared for by Sheriff's inmates.

"A number of these animals were left for dead by thoughtless and cruel individuals," Arpaio said. "The folks who bid on my sling are now partners in their survival, with special thanks to Mr. Dikes."
