HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An outage Monday morning caused about 12,000 residents to lose power Monday morning in Sumner County.

Channel 4 started to get reports of the outage around 6:30 a.m.

The problem affected residents in the areas near Walton Ferry and Sanders Ferry roads and West Main Street.

An NES spokeswoman said the outage was caused by a lightning arrester that failed inside a substation.

This piece of equipment works similar to a surge protector, said the spokeswoman.

The failure of the lightning arrester caused all of the equipment in the substation to go offline.

Crews were able to fix the problem in about an hour.  Most of the power outages were restored by 7 a.m.
