Fire at Fairview business prompts evacuations

FAIRVIEW, TN (WSMV) -

A fire at a Fairview business Friday afternoon prompted authorities to close nearby roads, and evacuate people in the area.

The fire was reported at Fairview Asphalt Products near Highway 96 and Loblolly Pine Boulevard after 1 p.m.

The cause of the fire and details on what was burning have not been released, but the roads have since reopened and surrounding residents are allowed to return home as the fire dies down.

The plant was not operating Friday, but it keeps a certain degree of heat always going, so the materials are ready to go when the business is open, police said.

Emergency crews turned off utility service to the plant when they arrived, and that appears to have helped get the fire under control.

Plant management was called to the scene to update fire officials about what chemicals were involved, and authorities said there does not appear to be a threat to people who live in the area.
