CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Soddy-Daisy's Olivia Williams turned in some outfield heroics and Walker Valley's Sidney Hooper dominated in the circle to lead Tennessee to a doubleheader sweep of Georgia in the annual Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Softball Classic Wednesday night at Frost Stadium.
Williams, who usually plays infield for the Lady Trojans, came up with a highlight reel catch in right field for the game's final out to preserve a 4-2 win in the opener. Georgia put two runners aboard with two outs to bring Northwest Whitfield's Mykeah Johnson to the plate as the winning run, but her potential game-tying line-drive to right was snagged just above the grass by Williams.
Hooper, who earned the night's Most Valuable Player honors, was in control throughout the nightcap, giving up a lead-off single to Calhoun's Shanta McDaniel in the first before retiring the next 18 batters in order en route to a 2-0 Tennessee win.
The Austin Peay signee also singled and scored the first run of game two on a third-inning from GPS' Katy Richardson.
Bledsoe County's Lydia Ritchie was named Tennessee's Player of the Night after picking up the pitching win in the opener. She struck out ten and allowed just one run on four hits in four innings before UTC signee and CSAS ace Liana Rodrigues closed out the final two innings for the save.
East Hamilton's Shaliyah Geathers, Central's Brooke Womack and Hannah Powell, and Marion County's Brooke Baxter each had two hits in the opener. Womack doubled twice and scored two runs, while Geathers joined Baylor's Sarah Moore each finished with one RBI.
Heritage stars Savannah Goldsmith and Jesslyn Stockard, both UTC signees, drove in Georgia's two runs. Goldsmith had two hits, including an RBI double, to earn Georgia Player of the Night honors.
Northwest Whitfield's Emily Boyd and Ringgold's Brittany Portwood took the losses in the circle for Georgia.
East Hamilton's Cara Stiles coached the Tennessee squad to the victories, becoming the first person to be both a player and coach in the 16-year-old event.
