Firefighters save squirrel trapped in razor wire

LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

A squirrel that got stuck in a fence is now free thanks to some Lake Oswego firefighters.

On Thursday evening, crews from the Westlake fire station were driving on Greenridge Drive when firefighter Andrew Hedges noticed the squirrel in a peculiar situation.

The squirrel had been walking along the top of a fence line with a razor wire on the top when its tail became tangled, firefighters said.

The animal was unable to move.

Hedges, along with firefighters Dick Griffin and Lieutenant Jim Doane stopped and found that the squirrel was trying to chew his own tail off to get free.

The firefighters quickly grabbed a ladder and went to work.

Hedges held the squirrel, while Griffin untangled its tail, firefighters said.

"We were able to free the animal from the entanglement and set him free in the setting. He was actually at the time attempting to chew his tail off to get free, he was very much stuck and wouldn't have been able to free himself otherwise," Doane explained.
