Customers get checks in settlement against De Beers' diamonds

Posted: Updated:

It has taken more than five years, but some people who bought diamonds are finally getting their small share of a big class action settlement.

Diamond giant De Beers was accused of manipulating the price of gems even if the customers bought one from a different company.

There was $135 million to go around, and anyone who bought a diamond between 1994 and 2006 was eligible in the settlement.

Channel 4 News aired a story in 2008 about people filing with the court for their share, and their hope was people who paid thousands of dollars for a ring might get a decent chunk of it back.

Now, administrators in that case have finally started sending out checks.

However, the more people who entered the case, the less money each person received.

One producer at Channel 4 got a check for just $46, but other viewers have reported receiving up to $95 in the settlement.
