Teens learn health benefits of CrossFit

Posted: Updated:

You may have heard of the fitness program called CrossFit, but it's not just for adults.

Some Middle Tennessee teens are busy this summer learning the workout program.

Rachel Willis, 17, first heard about CrossFit from her physical education teacher. She gave the strength and conditioning program a try and was hooked.

The soon-to-be-senior now comes to the Eastside Gym three times a week.

Willis said it's more than just a good workout.

"It's empowering and personally fulfilling to know that I can do this later in life," said Willis.

More than just fitness, it's about building character and community, says coach Rebecca Brown.

She quit her full-time job last year to work with Steve's Club Nashville, which provides CrossFit for free to at-risk or under-served youths.

"It's about learning to eat properly. It's about really just having something to do where everyone is friends," said Brown.
