A Dickson County sheriff's deputy who has been in trouble before and was just recently back on the job is facing new allegations for crashing his car into a house while allegedly under the influence.

Deputy Mark Atchison is accused of crashing into a house just a few doors down from his own home.

This is not Atchison's first time working for the sheriff's department, nor is it his first time being accused of driving under the influence.

"If you have a person that is not going to live up and do what they're supposed to, and go by the rules, then he's not serving the people of Dickson County," said Joyce Fowlkes, former Dickson County Civil Service Board member.

Atchison was fired a few years ago after crashing his cruiser and failing a drug test.

Atchison and his attorney appealed once and were denied.

Then, when a new sheriff took over about two years ago, they appealed a second time, and the civil service board voted 2-1 to let Atchison back on the force.

Fowlkes had been on the board for more than 20 years, and she was the one dissenting vote.

"I just said, 'I will never vote for him, and if you two men decide to put him back on, I will not be a party to this.' So I left the civil service board," Fowlkes said.

The sheriff said there were problems with Atchison's original drug test, and proper procedure wasn't followed, so the results may have been tainted.

The county was facing a possible lawsuit, and the sheriff was advised by the county attorney to let Atchison back on the force to avoid wasting tax dollars.

"I don't think he should be on at any cost, you know. That isn't fair to our public that they're serving," Fowlkes said.

As for this latest alleged incident, Atchison is now suspended without pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
