Ideas solicited for fairgrounds

Posted: Updated:

The Metro Fair Board is soliciting proposals for new uses of the fairgrounds property.

The board has put out a request for information from private or public groups or individuals who want to plan future events at the fairgrounds or who want to invest in the property for long-term benefit.

"We're just trying to be proactive so we don't run into problems," said Metro Nashville Fair Board Chairman Ned Horton.

"If it's going to continue with its current uses, there's more room for great events. There are more expos, and other concepts that may come out of the woodwork here," he said.

The fair board is inviting anyone who's interested to submit executive summaries of what they propose to do.

The proposals could either follow the guidelines established by a series of consultants' reporters, or could break new ground.

"There's lot of entrepreneurs here. We're just encouraging dialog," Horton said.

It's a critical time not to leave the fair in limbo, Horton said, because this year is the first time  the fair board has asked the city for a subsidy, and it's one the mayor has cut out of his budget.
