LAFAYETTE, GA (WRCB) -

More than 100 rescuers responded to Ellison's Cave after a man fell approximately 40 feet in the cave.

Officials say the caver, a 54-year-old male, fell around 4 p.m. Sunday while exploring the cave in LaFayette, Georgia.

The man and his group are from Pennsylvania.

They say he and his caving group are experienced, and were deep in the cave when he fell.

The man's companions called out to him but got not response. His friend had to hike two hours to get out of the cave and call for help.

Emergency responders arrived to the scene around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The injured man has a broken femur. He received a blood transfusion in the cave before he was extricated using an intricate pulley system.

It was approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday when he was finally pulled out of the cave.

One hundred five rescue crews from across the Southeast assisted in the rescue. Officials say the man was 800 feet down in the cave.

Lifeforce transported the man in critical condition to Erlanger. His name has not been released pending family notification.
