A 2-year-old child in Trigg County was shot in the head but survived his injuries Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 9:16 p.m. at the home of David Southwick, according to the Kentucky State Police.
The child was initially transported to Trigg County Hospital by ambulance, but was later taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said somehow the child got a hold of a gun.
Troopers warn if you have a firearm around the home, to keep it away from a child's reach.
"If you have younger children, they don't understand the seriousness of firearms and what can happen," said KSP Lt. Jonathan Grant. "So I would urge you, as a parent, to make sure you have your guns in a position or place they can't be reached."
Officials said it appears to be an accidental shooting, but authorities are still investigating.
