NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro schools are making a big push to improve student health, and one high school is taking that initiative one step further.

Maplewood High School's new state-of-the-art fitness center is working to keep students fit and to fight obesity.

Student Michael Parham, a junior at the school, said he's focused on next year's basketball season.

"I try to get here as much as I can. With basketball, we need to work. This is where it starts right here," said Parham.

Parham is quick to point out that staying fit is about more than sports and just as much about making sure his family history stays in the past.

"Diabetes runs in my family. I know how important it is to stay active and healthy," said Parham.

The school's newest fitness program is impressive. The 2,200-square-foot facility is packed with high-end, commercial-use equipment.

The best part is that it's on campus where working out is just a piece of the puzzle.

"We feel like it's a strategy to become more active and live a healthy and active lifestyle. It's a big step to get our community more fit as well," said Principal Ron Woodard.

This program has been in the works for six years.

For the students like Parham, it's a welcome addition to his day.

"I like doing pushups with the dumbbells in an effort to get my chest bigger, even though it's still small," he jokes.

Doctors say genetics play a role in whether or not you may develop Type 2 diabetes.

You can't change that, but you can change your diet and exercise routines, which is what the program aims to do.
