Police said a homeless man admitted to smoking crack cocaine before a three-hour police standoff on the roof of a south Nashville motel Friday morning.

The standoff began about 2:30 a.m. at a Scottish Inn near the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and Fesslers Lane.

Police said Charles Carroll, 41, was pacing back and forth on the roof, periodically yelling something incoherent.

Officers and a negotiator were positioned on the ground, trying to convince him to come down from the roof.

Around 5:40 a.m., Carroll was talked down and surrendered without incident.  He is charged with vandalism and disorderly conduct and is jailed on a $10,000 bond.
