BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) -

A lengthy police standoff with a man in his 70s that began Wednesday evening came to a peaceful ending Thursday morning.

The incident began about 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 8200 block of Alamo Road.

The standoff started when 71-year-old Wayne Cleveland and his wife were at home, and she thought he may have had a weapon.

This caused her to leave the house unharmed and call police.

Officers established a perimeter around the residence to ensure the safety of neighbors as they attempted to contact the man inside.

After negotiations, the standoff ended around 10:30 a.m. when the man finally came outside and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

The couple has older children who were contacted about the situation.

Police believed he was more of a harm to himself than anyone else. No homes were evacuated, and no one was hurt.

Once he is medically cleared, Cleveland faces a charge of aggravated assault, police said.
