There were solemn moments Wednesday in Washington, as police officers paused to remember colleagues killed in the line of duty.

President Barack Obama and hundreds of others gathered for the Peace Officers Memorial at Capitol Hill.

The memorial honors the 143 members of law enforcement killed in the line of duty across the country in the past year and coincides with National Police Week.

Three of the fallen officers are from Tennessee and fellow officers traveled from La Vergne, Franklin County, Dickson County, Mount Juliet and other Middle Tennessee departments in a chartered bus adorned with police department decals.

"The one terrible thing about this week is the fact that we're all here for the same reason and that reason is we all know a law enforcement officer that was killed in the line of duty," said Mount Juliet police Sgt. Tyler Chandler.

Obama said it's a sacrifice that can never be forgotten.

"The 143 fallen officers we honor today put themselves on the front lines of that fight, to preserve that quality of community and protect the roots of our greatness," Obama said.

The service was designed to remind people that gratitude for peace officers shouldn't be reserved for just this one day.

The Midstate officers who went on the trip to Washington paid for it out of pocket, with the exception of some generous donations from Anchor Tours and Two Rivers Ford, who provided the transportation.
