SMITHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Putnam County woman has died after an apparent accident that ended with her vehicle submerged in Center Hill Lake.

The incident was reported about 12:25 p.m. at a boat access ramp near the Johnson Chapel Recreation Area in DeKalb County.

Two passengers in the vehicle were able to escape, but the female driver - 40-year-old Nancy Randolph - was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said a deputy and two detectives who responded at the scene jumped into the cold water and risked their own lives to recover the woman and start CPR before medical crews arrived.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
