Man who lost hand in work accident fitted for robotic replacement

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Thanks to modern technology, a local man who lost most of one hand is about to get a robotic replacement.

Robert Loney lost all four fingers in a terrible accident that happened at work when he got his hand caught in a machine. All that was left was his thumb and palm

In March, his doctors fitted Loney for a robotic prosthetic. Loney said his robotic hand is almost like having the real thing.

"Just little simple things, it makes it a lot easier. Because even something as simple as opening a bottle, instead of having to hold it around my arm and twist it, I can just grab it and twist it," Loney said.

Doctors are now fitting Loney with a cosmetic hand, which is like a glove that will fit over the prosthetic.

The cosmetic hand will have limited functionality but help make Loney's robotic hand look more natural.
