Horse owners draw post positions for Steeplechase

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

It's almost time for the 72nd annual Iroquois Steeplechase at Percy Warner Park, and horse owners gathered with event organizers Thursday to draw post positions.

Thousands of people are expected Saturday at the Steeplechase, which raises money to benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

The drawing for post positions is more symbolic than anything - it just determines the numbers the horses will wear during the races.

This year, there are a record 68 entries for the eight races, including the featured race: the Iroquois. There were so many entries, in fact, the organizers had to add a race.

Gates open Saturday at 8 a.m. and the first race starts at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $15, available for purchase at the park or online. Children ages 12 and under are admitted free.
