Suspicious package? No, just a baseball sent to the Dalai Lama

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Sure, a baseball autographed by Babe Ruth may be rare, but what about a baseball autographed by the Dalai Lama?

A baseball sent to the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader drew the attention of the Portland Police Bureau on Wednesday.

The Dalai Lama arrived at Portland's airport on Wednesday morning, and he's set to take part in a discussion at the University of Portland on Thursday.

In advance of his talk at the university, someone sent him a package, and police were notified when it arrived at the university loading dock.

Officers responded to investigate the suspicious package, which, as it turned out, was just a baseball with a request for the Dalai Lama to autograph it.

Portland police had the scene cleared by 12:30 p.m.

"Many thanks to UP Public Safety and the Portland Police for handling the situation," the University of Portland's twitter account said. "Very excited to have the Dalai Lama on campus tomorrow!"
