Red Cross on standby to help with possible flooding

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

As the rain continues to fall into swollen creeks and rivers, many Red Cross volunteers are keeping a close eye. Volunteers across the mid-state are on standby should they need to quickly respond to flooded communities.

"Our volunteers are ready to go," Beth Ferguson with Red Cross Nashville said.

They're ready to set up shelters like the one in Stewart County last weekend. In the middle of the night, volunteers quickly responded to victim's caught in flash floods.

"It's been a long busy week and we're trying to just stay energized and stay alert, so that we're ready to respond if needed," Ferguson said.

Ferguson said many were surprised by the sudden flooding in parts of the mid-state last weekend. As the rain continues to fall, she warns people it's important to be prepared and know what to do if high waters close in on your home.

"You need to take responsibility for your family," Ferguson said. "Make sure you've got that emergency kit, your weather radio and you know what to do and if you're told to evacuated you need to evacuate."

Nearly three years ago, many were forced from their homes during historic flooding. Ferguson said the Red Cross learned many lessons from that crisis. She said they plan to put those lessons to use this weekend if needed.

"It really has helped us learn and grow and to be able to mobilize much faster and open up shelters in a really timely manner, just making sure we're getting help to people as quickly as we can," Ferguson said.

The shelters through the mid-state are run by volunteers. Ferguson says they're always looking for more people to get trained, so they can provide the help when it's so needed.
