Two area track stars earn state titles on day one of GHSA Meet

Posted: Updated:

The GHSA Boys' State Meet is ongoing in Jefferson this weekend.

We already have some state champs from Southwest Georgia.

Monroe's Kevin Williams, one of the favorites heading into Thursday's field events, is the AAAA State Champion in the long jump. He also took second in the triple jump.

Brooks County's Deric Herring only needed one attempt to win the AA long jump title.

His first jump went 22' 11.5". He then faulted on his five remaining attempts, but that first mark good enough for a state title.

Don Mills (Westover): 6th in AAAA discus, 7th in AAAA shotput

Chris O'Neal (Westover): 10th in AAAA shotput

Juwon Young (Albany): 8th in AAAA discus, 11th in AAAA shotput

Micah Williams (Terrell Co.): 2nd in A-Public Discus

Brytan Wetzel (Baconton Charter): 2nd in A-Public 1600m run
