It appears there was a pattern of trouble for a local man long before he was accused of murdering his wife and leading authorities on an overnight manhunt in an exclusive Brentwood neighborhood.
Randy Maidens, 42, is charged in the death of his wife, Dr. Rachael Maidens, but that was not his only run-in with the law.
He was arrested for DUI after he ran a vehicle into a transformer and caused a power outage in late February.
Now, Channel 4 News has learned of other incidents this year involving Randy Maidens and allegations of substance abuse. One of those happened at Brick's Cafe on Nolensville Road on a January night.
"I just had a gentleman walk in and he seems pretty intoxicated," said a Brick's employee during a 911 call. "I can't tell if he's drunk or if he is on something else. But I'm afraid to serve him first off, but I'm afraid to let him leave."
Employees said that man described in the call was Randy Maidens.
The 911 operator then sent a police officer toward the restaurant, but before the officer could get there, the same employee called back even more concerned.
"He stood up and pulled some stuff out of his pocket, and a shot gun shell fell out of his pocket, and he picked it up and put it back in pocket along with the big bottle of what looks like Tylenol," the caller said.
The employee then went on to tell the operator Randy Maidens tried to leave, but she convinced him to stay.
"He said his wife called him and he needs to go home," the employee said. "But he won't let me call his wife to come and get him."
Police did show up, but Randy Maidens was not arrested. Instead, witnesses said Rachel Maidens came and picked him up that night.
It doesn't seem like that was just a one-time situation. Channel 4 News also found a trespassing case against Randy Maidens from late March in Florida, but since that remains an open investigation the details were limited.
