Woman jailed after tossing lit cigarette from car, refusing ticket
FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -
A Hickman County woman was jailed Sunday night after she allegedly tossed a cigarette from a car window and then refused to sign her littering ticket.
Charlene Ward, 27, of Lyles, is accused of flicking a lit cigarette from her car on Murfreesboro Road near Southwinds Drive in Franklin.
An officer pulled her over for littering, but Ward refused to sign the citation - instead telling the officer to just take her to jail, police said.
Ward was then booked into the Williamson County Jail for littering and failure to sign a citation, and then released after appearing before a magistrate.
Franklin police said littering typically results in a fine no greater than $50, and Tennessee law also requires defendants to sign their police citation.
Police added that tossing cigarettes from a vehicle is illegal and could be particularly hazardous during a hot, dry season. Fires resulting from a lit cigarette that cause property damage or injury could bring other criminal charges.
