WHITE HOUSE, TN (WSMV) -

It was back to work Monday for the Hendersonville man who finished first in last weekend's St. Jude Country Music Marathon.

Scott Wietecha won with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 41 seconds and became only the second American to win the race. He finished second in the marathon two years ago.

"With running, the stopwatch wins every time. Whoever's the first runner is just a better runner. That's what I like. It's black and white," Wietecha said.

Wietecha said he could feel the stares of awe and admiration coming from the 7, 8 and 9 year olds he is with every day. As a physical education teacher, winning a marathon in front of your hometown crowd definitely raises your credentials with the kids.

Wietecha is just 135 pounds soaking wet, which he was Saturday as he crossed the rain-soaked finish line for his first ever marathon victory.

"The first few miles, I kind of acted like a diva and tried to avoid all the puddles. You don't want to get your socks wet. Then, you don't care about it anymore," Wietecha said.

Now, he's back to running P.E. classes at H. B. Williams Elementary School in White House, where he was surrounded by the children's handmade signs of congratulations.

"The kids stare at me, and a lot of them are giving me '5.' I'm a mini-celebrity, which kind of makes you feel good," Wietecha said.

Wietecha has been running since high school, and with his size, he never thought about trying football. "I was always scared to get hit," Wietecha said. "When it comes down to fight or flight, I was always good at flight."

And he can definitely fly.

Next up for Wietecha is the U.S. Track & Field 25 km Championships in two weeks in Michigan. He said he was scheduled to run the Boston Marathon earlier this month but had to cancel his trip.
