Columbia nursing home sets wheelchair parade record

COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

A Middle Tennessee nursing home is hoping to roll into the record books. Signature Healthcare in Columbia tried Wednesday to break a Guinness World Record for the longest wheelchair parade.

Many of the residents decorated their wheelchairs with umbrellas, balloons and streamers, and one man's chair even looked like a camouflage carriage.

Lemyra Townsend, who is 104 years old, was the grand marshal and offered some advice for younger generations.

"Just don't sit down all the time. Just get up and make yourself useful," Townsend said.

There were 202 wheelchairs in the parade, which is a new world record.

The residents don't yet know when representatives from Guinness will visit to verify the new world record.
