NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The rock group 3 Doors Down has canceled upcoming concerts set for Nashville and several other cities after its bassist was charged with vehicular homicide after a fatal crash late Friday night on Interstate 40 near Hermitage.

Police believe Robert Todd Harrell, 41, who lives in Mt. Juliet, TN, was driving a 2011 Cadillac CTS westbound on I-40 at a high rate of speed when his car clipped a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup.

The pickup, driven by Paul Howard Shoulders Jr., 47, of Horseshoe Drive, went out of control, struck a guardrail, traveled down an embankment and overturned, police said.

Officers said Harrell showed indications of impairment during field sobriety tests and appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant.

The victim's family said Shoulders loved tinkering with cars and was a hard worker. He also enjoyed racing his cars on drag strips across the country.

"He was a laid-back guy who didn't argue with people. He was the guy who didn't do it," said brother-in-law Mickey Baltz

Baltz said Shoulders' sister remains too distraught to talk as she now prepares to bury her brother.

"She's heartbroken. He is the last member of her immediate family," Baltz said.

A message posted to the 3 Doors Down website Tuesday said: "Out of respect to Paul Howard Shoulders Jr., and his family, 3 Doors Down has canceled the band's four scheduled U.S. April/May Appearances."

And Shoulders' co-workers at an Inglewood automotive shop posted a message about how much he will be missed.

"Paul was my friend and employee. It feels like a part of me is gone. I am broken-hearted," said Browns Automotive owner Ronnie Brown.

Brown said Shoulders didn't miss a single day of work in his three years at the shop until Saturday.

"I didn't hear until Saturday morning. He was supposed to be at work at 8, but he didn't show up," he said.

Harrell was released Tuesday on $100,000 bond.
