Reese Witherspoon speaks out about Atlanta arrest

Posted: Updated:

Reese Witherspoon released a statement via her manager to CBS Atlanta News on Sunday night, speaking out about her recent arrest.

Georgia State Patrol officials said the actress was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after a traffic stop involving her husband Jim Toth in Atlanta early Friday morning.

Witherspoon said, through Meredith O'Sullivan Wasson, that she could not comment on the ongoing legal situation, and that her husband's arrest was a "scary situation" but "no excuse for her behavior."

"But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," Witherspoon wrote. "I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."

An incident report stated that a state trooper saw a car driven by Witherspoon's husband that was weaving in and out of lanes.

The officer wrote in the report that Witherspoon disobeyed multiple orders to stay in the car while he performed a field sobriety test on Toth and that when she refused to return the car, she was handcuffed and arrested.

The officer wrote that Witherspoon asked him, "Do you know who I am?"

Toth was charged with DUI and taken to the Atlanta City Jail, where he was booked.

Toth and Witherspoon were scheduled for court Monday morning, but did not show and had their lawyer ask for the case to be rescheduled.

Witherspoon is in New York promoting a new film.
