Metro police said a suspect was arrested after meth-making materials were found in a room at the Hallmark Inn on West Trinity Lane Sunday.

According to investigators, three motel staffers went into a room at the motel at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday and discovered a man asleep on the bed, along with items consistent with making meth in the room.

One of the staffers, Wendy Caldwell, said her eyes began stinging while in the room. "I saw the man laying in the bed. And I could see stuff all over the floor and white powder on the floor. I woke him up and said 'what are you doing'" Caldwell said.

Police said Caldwell notified the motel manager, who then told the man to leave.

The authorities were then called and the two rooms the man had occupied were being checked. Drain cleaner and ammonia were found. "You don't want people within the area of these chemicals, especially if they are reacting together, " said Captain Kay Lokey, Metro Police.

The suspect, Michael H. Smith, 28, was taken into custody and charged with promotion of meth manufacture.

Several people were evacuated from the motel while police investigated. "Removing it, getting all the people away from it, I didn't know what it was. I knew it wasn't in flames, so it wasn't something like that, but I didn't know if something like that could explode," Caldwell said.

Police said Caldwell and other office staff were decontaminated at the scene.

"I don't feel bad for him. I want to beat him up. I want to punch him out. It's dangerous, very dangerous," Caldwell said.
