It is a difficult surgery even for an adult to endure, but a Tennessee family now headed to Ohio where their 15-month-old will undergo a liver transplant Saturday night.

Levi Smith was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare liver condition that only affects one in 18,000 infants, when he was just two months old.

Update from family spokesperson:

"At 11:51 am, the nurses announced that Levi has a new liver!! They are now working on reconnecting the vessels and the bile ducts which will probably take up to two more hours! And Levi is stable and everything is going as smooth as it could!! So yay for Levi! We will continue to keep you all updated and You all just keep the prayers and shares coming!"

Unfortunately the surgery could not be performed in Nashville, so the family is traveling to Cincinnati for the 12-16 hour surgery.

Levi's surgery could cost anywhere from $150,000 to $200,000. And the family will have to relocate to Cincinnati for three months as Levi recovers.

The only way the family can pay for it is through fundraising, so they've started a nonprofit called Team Levi.
