Man killed in Goodlettsville lawn mower accident

Posted: Updated:

Safety officials are investigating why a man who was working for a landscaping company died on the side of a road Wednesday morning in Goodlettsville.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Louisville and Springfield highways at about 10 a.m.

Investigators said the man's company, Five Star Lawn and Landscaping, was contracted by the city of Goodlettsville to mow the area.

He was mowing a part of the median when he somehow lost control of his 1,000-pound riding mower. It slipped down a steep incline into knee-deep water near a culvert and apparently crushed him.

The victim's name has not been released, as police work to notify the man's next-of-kin in another state.

Co-workers said they were weeding and mowing the area when they noticed the victim was nowhere to be found. Jeremy Stewart was the first to notice what had happened.

"I hollered and saw his legs floating, so I jumped in the water and tried to lift him," Stewart said.

Steve Hawkins, an administrator with the Tennessee Occupational Safety & Health Administration, said Five Star Lawn and Landscaping has a clean record with the agency.

Hawkins said as a matter of course, an investigator was called to the scene, and within about four weeks they will determine if there were any violations.
