Cheatham County football coach leaves lasting legacy

It was said he was the toughest coach you will ever love.

Coach Ralph Spangler, often called the "Bear Bryant" of Cheatham County passed away Friday at a nursing home.

He had been battling multiple myeloma since 2010.

Coach Spangler left behind quite a legacy.

He is an icon in Cheatham County sports.

Coach Spangler came to Cheatham Central in 1951. He had three undefeated season as football coach. He also went on to coach both boys and girls basketball teams.

Spangler served as football coach at Sycamore Middle School from 1978 until his retirement in 1985.

He was inducted into the TSSA Hall of Fame in 2000.

On Monday, as a tribute to the late coach, all schools in Cheatham County will lower their flags to half staff.

Funeral services are still pending.
