City of Manchester finances subject to TBI investigation

MANCHESTER, TN (WSMV) -

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is taking a closer look at the city of Manchester after a blistering audit revealed serious financial problems.

The new mayor requested the independent audit following rumors of corruption, and the audit revealed secret bank accounts, unrecorded money from fundraisers and, as auditors put it, a "fundamental lack of control."

Mayor Lonnie Norman spoke with Channel 4 News about what he expects the TBI will find.

"There's two or three different things - some of it's money, some of it's equipment. I don't know what they'll find," he said.

The county district attorney announced the TBI investigation Thursday, saying in certain cases it seems unclear how previous city leaders spent and accounted for tax dollars.

Officials have not indicated how long the TBI investigation could last.
