Hendersonville residents want to end sex in popular park

Posted: Updated:

One of the prettiest parks in Middle Tennessee has been damaged by its online reputation as a place to cruise for quick public sex, but many say it's time for Hendersonville to take back Rockland Park and move the indecent exposure back behind closed doors.

The activity bothers police and bothers other park-goers, including lifelong Hendersonville resident Ron Miller, who said he enjoys walking in scenic Rockland Park for exercise.

"This is priceless real estate," said Miller, who works as a private detective.

But during one winter morning walk around sunrise, Miller said he saw something strange.

"A guy pulled up next to me, rolled down his window and started driving the same speed I was walking. And then it hit me like a ton of bricks: he's not looking for directions," Miller said.

Miller said every day at sunrise, he sees cars with lone male occupants just sitting in the parking lot, apparently looking for other men.

Miller started taking pictures of trash the men would throw out after their encounters, writing down license plate numbers and sharing what he saw with Hendersonville police.

"Now we're learning, for the lifestyle of meeting members of the same sex, it's a spot that's become quite popular," said Hendersonville Police Sgt. Denney Coarsey.

Sure enough, during a simple internet search we found several listings for male interactions at the park and even a recommendation for people to go to the back of the park.

Our news crew drove around to the back of the park and found three cars, each with a lone, male occupant just sitting. Within a minute, all those cars drove away.

"This is the first time they've all taken off like they're on fire. It proves one thing: they know they are doing wrong," Miller said.

Hendersonville police have increased patrols to the park, but keep in mind sitting in your car at a park is not a crime. Officers can only become involved if they catch indecent exposure in the act, and that can be extremely difficult.
