MULINO, OR (KPTV) -

An anonymous tip led Clackamas County deputies to a shed in Mulino. Waiting inside it was an alligator not expecting company.

The 4-foot-long gator, known as Wally, is estimated to be about 12 to 14 years old. He wasn't too excited to see the deputies, who called in Richard Ritchey of NW Herpetological Services to help them out.

"When we opened it, he actually charged the sheriff," said Ritchey. "Big surprise, he was growling, puffing up, standing up on his front legs really putting on a show. That was his territory."

Owning alligators is prohibited in Oregon without a special permit, which was not issued in this case. However, deputies said no charges are being filed at this time.

Wally is now in the care of Ritchey.

Wally is also going to become a familiar face to local kids. The alligator will be going around to area schools as part of Ritchey's reptile education exhibit.

Ritchey said he does about 500 shows a year for kids and adults, teaching them about the animals.
