Child recovering from wound in south Nashville shooting

Posted: Updated:

A 4-year-old girl is truly lucky to be alive after she was grazed by a bullet Monday afternoon while innocently playing after school outside near her home.

The shooting was reported about 4 p.m. near the intersection of Lewis and Cannon streets when police say two men exchanged gunshots.

The girl was caught in the crossfire, and now her mother has had enough.

"When it hit my child, that was a warning for me to go," said mother Shericka Ikeard.

Ikeard's daughter, Nevaeh, was struck just above the ear, leaving a gash nearly 1" long.

"It was half-an-inch from killing her, and I'm just blessed," Ikeard said.

Thankfully, the young girl is resting inside now, but the trouble seems to stir right on the very sidewalk outside her back door at the Napier Homes in south Nashville.

Police continue to patrol the area, but shootings keep happening near Lewis Street, including at least three since December 2012.

Ikeard said she was inside with her 5-year-old son when Monday's shooting rang out.

"I was checking his report card, and the next thing I know, I heard multiple gunshots. The only thing I could think about was my child. So I ran outside, and there she was, screaming, holding her head," Ikeard said.

The shooting occurred right between two playground areas.

"The popsicle truck was right there, and she wanted a popsicle," Ikeard said.

Now, there will be no more playing outside for Ikeard's kids as the mother looks for a new place to live.

"I'm just glad God spared me with her one more day, one more day," she said.

Investigators say a 37-year-old man who was believed to be the target in Monday's shooting was shot in the hand.

He was treated and released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police continue to search for the other man, and they are still not sure whether he was hurt or not.
