Human waste from KY town ends up in Cumberland River

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The state of Kentucky is offering to loan a town money to keep human waste out of the Cumberland River.

Pineville, KY, sits along the Cumberland near the borders of Tennessee and Virginia, northeast of Knoxville.

The town's water system is reportedly in such poor shape that when there's heavy rain, human waste ends up in the Cumberland.

That water eventually flows to Nashville and beyond, and the Cumberland is also the source of our drinking water.

Now, Kentucky is offering nearly $2 million in low-interest loans to Pineville so that the city can upgrade its water system.
