SPRING HILL, TN (WSMV) -

A 10-year-old girl who had been waiting for a heart transplant following a sudden illness after complications from the flu has died.

The entire community of Spring Hill had been rallying for Halle Henderson, who became critically ill when her flu last month led to a sudden cardiac arrest at Vanderbilt.

Hundreds of people decorated their mailboxes with ribbons to show their support, and a Facebook page in her name gained thousands of followers in just days.

"She just has the sweetest heart of any little girl you could ever meet," said family friend Teresa Johnson. "She has a smile that can light up a room."

Tracy Anderson of local shop Polka Dots has a basket out for donations to Halle's family.

"There's just burdens they have most of us can't even imagine having," said Anderson. "We've had hundreds of dollars in gift cards dropped off."

Meanwhile, Allendale Elementary Principal Melonye Lowe said Halle's classmates are even vocal in their support.

"As the students got on one particular bus yesterday, they began just impromptu shouting, 'Halle! Halle! Halle!'" said Lowe. "They chanted her name all the way home yesterday."

A blood drive to honor Halle will continue as planned Saturday at Brentwood Middle School from 7 a.m. until noon. The Rotary Club is offering a pancake breakfast during the drive and will be accepting donations for the Henderson family.

A Halle Henderson benefit fund has been established at any First Tennessee Bank location.
