Middle TN woman collects donations for Haiti victims

Posted: Updated:

Most Americans take shoes and clothing for granted, but for many people around the world, they can be luxury.

Tracy Swack started a new shoe-and-clothing drive in January.

Their outreach spans the globe and Swack hopes her efforts will take her to Haiti to see her hard work come to fruition.

She has already collected 20,000 pounds of clothing and shoes through drop off sites around Middle Tennessee.

Swack is competing with other groups to collect donations. If she's the winner, she'll go to Haiti with the Nashville-based charity group Soles 4 Souls.

They'll take her donations to those still struggling after the 2010 earthquake hit the Caribbean country.

"I thought about people there three years after the earthquake. Just a human touch - massaging and fitting feet - will bring comfort," Swack.

A few months ago Swack lost her dad to cancer and found herself feeling helpless during his illness, so this is one way she's been able to help someone else in need.

"I felt like this was something that at least I could take shoes and clothes to people. It might make a difference for them," said Swack

If she wins the competition, Swack said she has several pairs of her dad's shoes to take to Haiti that she'll give away.

She said she she'll look to give the shoes to someone with a warm smile, just like her dad.
