Columbia couple displaced by early-morning fire

Posted: Updated:

Emergency crews battled a house fire in Maury County on Wednesday morning.

The fire started around 5 a.m. in the attic of a home in the 200 block of Birchwood Drive in Columbia.

Cris Russell, who lives at the house, said she was in the shower getting ready for work when her dogs started barking and then the lights went out.

Russell said she ran out of the house wearing only a towel, but then ran back into the burning house to get her robe.  By that time, her husband had called 911.

The family's dogs got out safely, but they're still looking for their cat.

The fire was contained to the right side of the structure and extinguished by 6:30 a.m.

The American Red Cross was at the scene and will be assisting the couple with a place to stay.
