Majority of TN teachers spend $250 or more on supplies, study says

Posted: Updated:

A new report shows many Tennessee teachers are paying hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket to make sure their students get a good classroom experience.

The survey conducted by the Professional Educators of Tennessee shows that a majority of Tennessee teachers spend their own money on necessity items for their students, such as books and supplies.

Last month, the group asked nearly 1,000 public school teachers across the state how much they spend on their classrooms, and more 61 percent say they spend at least $250 out-of-pocket each year.

The goal of the survey, the teachers' group said, is to educate policy makers and bring to light an expense that's often overlooked when making decisions about public education and teacher salaries.
