GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - Rangers in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park helped three groups of hikers who got stranded in snow near Clingmans Dome Road.

WBIR-TV reported park officials were called first on Sunday afternoon by a man who said he was having chest pains at the Mount Collins Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. As rangers were hiking in to help him, they encountered two other groups of hikers who needed help getting off the mountain.

Park spokeswoman Molly Shroer said the hikers were unprepared for the three inches of snow that fell on that section of the trail.

A snowplow cleared the way for an ambulance to be sent to the area of the shelter. None of the 10 hikers wanted to go to a hospital.
