NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
In one single moment the lives of a young mid-state family changed forever. A car crossed the center lane and crashed head-on back in January.
The crash killed Megan Bouge's 3-year old daughter and her mother. Since the crash, she's been at Vanderbilt Medical Center. She is currently in the rehabilitation hospital where she is working to walk again.
Bouge said she can't focus on all that she has lost, in order to heal.
Bouge says her last memory of her daughter Wyncie, was in the car that January night. They, along with Bouge's mom and 2-week-old son, were headed home after some shopping and dinner.
"I remember was showing Wyncie a new cowgirl hat that I had bought her and telling her that she could try it on when we got home," Bouge said.
They never made it. Investigators say Mandricus Darden crossed four lanes of traffic and struck the Bouges' car head-on in Robertson County. Bouge's next memory is in Vanderbilt hospital.
"Having a nurse tell me what had happened and I couldn't say anything or move," Bouge said.
Bouge learned her mom had died that night and her 2-week-old son had a broken leg.
But Wyncie was also in the hospital, fighting for her life.
"Before we took her off the ventilator, we promised that this wasn't over and that we were going to try and save other babies and other families from having to go through this," Bouge said.
Wyncie's father, Brandon Bouge said, "My daughter touched people, she helped people in whatever way be better Christians or become Christians and that is what I focus on every day."
Megan Bouge said she doesn't dwell on the loss of her mother and daughter. Rather, she said getting her body to move again remains the focus of her day.
"I really want to walk, so day by day, that's what I am trying my best to do," Megan Bouge said.
The Bouges have since become an inspiration to friends and complete strangers. They've sent prayers, cards and dollars to help in the family's recovery.
"All the needs that we've had, they've already been taken care of before we even open our mouth, or the fact of the donations coming in, you know the thousands of dollars from people we don't know," Megan Bouge said. "That's how we've been blessed through this."
If you would like to help, there are ways to get involved:
Visit any Regions Bank branch and ask to contribute to the Bouge Family Assistance Fund.
You can also eat at La Plaza Mexican Restaurant in Goodlettsville. They'll donate 15 percent of what they make to the assistance fund on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Make sure you ask them to donate to the fund.
