Bulger's Beat: Nashville artist keeps 'Nancy' comic strip young

Posted: Updated:

She's been around for more than 80 years, yet she's still just 8 years old. Thanks to a Nashville comic strip artist, Nancy just keeps on going.

Guy Gilchrist has spent the last 18 years of his life thinking like a kid. Nancy and Sluggo are on his mind, and everyday of the year they help fill the funny pages in newspapers around the world.

"She's still wearing that same bad plaid she's been wearing for 80 years," Gilchrist said.

Gilchrist looks like he's got a rock 'n' roll attitude, but it never shows up in his comic strip, Nancy.

"I'm completely guilty of being the corniest cartoonist in the newspaper," he said.

Gilchrist has carried on the strip that Ernie Bushmiller created in 1930, and he's written numerous children's books and drawn for the Muppets as well as Looney Tunes.

His love for drawing began at an early age, when sitting and watching the cartoons wasn't good enough.

"If I had the TV on and Woody Woodpecker was on, I'd have a grocery bag and I'd be drawing Woody Woodpecker instead of just watching him," Gilchrist said.

Now, his focus is on Nancy full-time, and while it may look so simple, it's full of intricate detail without shortcuts.

"It's a huge commitment - 365 days a year for the rest of your life," he said.

The comic's appeal may be in its simplicity, as the title character and friend Sluggo might eat some ice cream, climb a few trees and then go fishing.

"They do things that don't cost any money. They're just using their imagination, so whether you're in Brazil, Venezuela, Nashville - wherever - it's universal," Gilchrist said.

The real marvel here is she's not Batman or Superman. Her superpower is that she's just human.

"She's a brat, an angel. She's everybody's kid," Gilchrist said. "She's all of us."

Gilchrist, like so many, came to Nashville years ago to write songs, which he's done successfully.

Now, he expects to spend the rest of his life with Nancy.
