NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival celebration is now underway. It celebrates Japanese culture.

Cherry blossoms have been a symbol of friendship between America and Japan since the mayor of Tokyo donated 3,000 cherry trees to Washington D.C. in 1912.

Now, decades later, festivals are hosted across the nation to honor that gift every spring.

Families flocked to Nashville's Public Square Saturday afternoon to enjoy music, a tea party, martial arts demonstrations and Japanese food.

The Consulate-General of Japan, the Japan-America Society of Tennessee and they Mayor's officer worked together to organize this year's event.
