Squirrel hunter finds 1960s-era cannon shell in Smyrna

SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

A resident in Smyrna found a 1960s-era cannon shell in his backyard on Thursday.

Resident Steve Saddler said he came across the shell on his Rocky Fork Road property while squirrel hunting in the early-morning hours. After the discovery, Saddler called Smyrna police.

Officials with Ft. Campbell military post exploded the shell after determining it was still live.

Smyrna police said the shell is likely left over from a former Air Force base that was once near the site.
